HISTORY

For this lesson’s discussion, you need to focus on the concept of Social Darwinism and how it related to the conquest of the West and then later the Imperial ambitions of the late 19th century. According to Charles Darwin, in the biological world, only the strongest organisms survive and reproduce where the weaker organisms die out and fail to perpetuate their species. For many in the 19th century and early 20th century, this natural law applied to not only the animal world but to societies as well. Thus, stronger societies, nations, peoples overwhelmed the weaker societies, nations, and peoples. In their this was a natural function so in any conflict between groups whether it be Native American tribes on the plains or other nations, it was justified that the stronger group or nation prevail and dominate or assimilate the weaker. This concept was seen as a justification for much of the Federal Indian policies of the day and the foreign policy of America. For this discussion, relate a couple of examples of this concept you gathered from the readings and then discuss if this is a valid concept in today’s world. Post one initial posting and respond to at least two other postings.
