History 101: World Civilizations
Between 600 and 1200 A.D., Europe, Africa, and Asia underwent commercial revolutions and the expansion of trade. In an essay of three full pages [double-spaced], discuss the new forces of political, religious, and social unity tied these regions together and made economic growth possible. You must explain how and why Europe emerged from political and economic turmoil, how trade routes connected large parts of Africa, and why China experienced a commercial revolution of its own. What made these changes possible? Your essay should draw heavily upon Chapters 10, 11, 12, and 13 of Hansen and Curtis, Voyages in World History, along with documents 11.3, 11.4, 11.5, 12.1, and 12.2 in Envisioning World Civilizations. You must cite your sources and use evidence. The final will be worth 250 points and we will grade it using the same rubric that we used on your earlier pieces.
This essay takes the place of an in-class final examination. You must submit an electronic version of the test via Turnitin.com [portal available on Canvas] and you must submit a hard, printed copy by 10:30am on Monday, May 7. We will not accept late papers. If you submit an essay only as an electronic file, or if you only submit a hard, printed copy, you will receive a zero. Ms. Moore and I will be in the classroom from 8:00 to 10:30am on the day of the test to collect your papers, after which you will not be able to submit the essay.
